The first day of construction starts early for everyone, with the alarm clock going off at 5 a.m. and the first crane installed around 6 a.m. We need all day because we have to move a total of about 34 containers from storage to the beach!
Every year, we start building the beach tents on March 1. This year, it falls on a Friday, which is slightly less favorable because many suppliers do not work on weekends. As a result, we cannot immediately go full throttle, but it also offers us the opportunity to slow down.
Fortunately, there are many loyal partners who put their weekend plans aside. We are very happy with our partner Meerkerk Houtbouw, who helps us fully build our restaurant and is responsible for our brand new toilet! Our last toilet unit was about 20 years old, so it was high time for a modern and luxurious upgrade!
A beach tent not only consists of a lot of wood, but also of various containers that cannot simply be moved. This requires cranes, both in our storage and on the beach. Luckily, our suppliers, like Immerzeel, have changed their weekend plans to make sure everything gets into place as quickly as possible.
As soon as the containers arrive at Scheveningen beach, we immediately try to put them in place. It takes fitting and measuring, because we have a specific area on the beach where our tent can go, but there are no lines on the beach like on the street. It is a big puzzle that we have to solve.
Did you know that our entire tent has custom-made iron frames? We used to have to measure wooden decks and smooth the sand manually, but with the frames, that is a thing of the past. This makes the work easier for our construction team and prevents the decks from sinking into the sand during the season.
The first day is over, all containers have arrived and the restaurant floor is lying. The next day, it is time to further build the business and lay down the decking frames for the outdoor terrace.
